YSU LIVE | Penguins lead Butler 17-7 at halftime
At halftime, the YSU football team lead Butler 17-7.
Jordan Thompson has an 8-yard TD run, Adaris Bellamy has a 5-yard TD run and Stephen Blose has a 29-yard field goal.
Butler's score came on a 3-yard pass from Andrew Huck to Jeff Larsen that was set up by a nifty double pass.
Here's a few halftime thoughts:
Butler, a non-scholarship FCS team, looks like a team that won its conference last year. The Bulldogs don't have the size and speed to match up with YSU but they're very good at what they do. This might be a four-touchdown game by the end of it but it won't be because Butler didn't compete.
YSU is doing a pretty good job running the ball (29 attempts, 157 yards). What's notable is that true freshman Jordan Thompson seems to be the second-string tailback, in front of true freshman Adaris Bellamy. (Jamaine Cook is the starter.) Also, redshirt freshman Torrian Pace seems to be out of the rotation. He didn't play against Penn State after missing much of camp with a hamstring injury. Still, he was probably the team's best running back in spring camp.
For those hoping for more updates, my apologies. I was working on a Steve Vallos feature for tomorrow's paper. Vallos, a Boardman native who was signed by the Browns earlier this week, called me just before the YSU game. You can look for the story in tomorrow's paper.
