Poland defeats Canfield

The Poland varsity girls soccer team defeated Canfield 2-1 Aug. 31 at Canfield.

Poland‘s goalie, Abby Frank, had five saves. Kelsey Malenic and Rachel Robertson scored one goal each.

Poland grad helps YSU golf team take second

Poland graduate and YSU freshman Angela Molaskey finished 16th with a 167 as the Youngstown State finished second at the YSU Invitational at The Links at Firestone Farms in Columbiana.

Youngstown State senior golfer Katie Rogner took medalist honors, but the Penguins could not maintain their first round lead on the final day. Rogner finished with 70-81 — 151. Rogner held on for a three-shot win over Dayton’s Clara Ang who had a 154. YSU junior Samantha Formeck finished third with 76-79 — 155.

In the team competition, Bethel shot 311 to overcome the Penguins’ 10-stroke lead following the first round to win the team title with a 637. YSU finished second with a 639 after carding a 323 on Tuesday. Dayton was third with a 655.

Basketball coaches meet in Columbus

The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association will have its annual clinic on Sept. 26-27 at The Greater Columbus Convention Center. Ohio State coach Thad Matta is among the speakers at the function.
