Seniors, advocates to be honored

Nominees were announced earlier this week for the 2010 Valley Legacy Awards, the annual event that honors civic-minded seniors and senior advocates for their contributions to the Mahoning Valley.
The 25 nominees will be recognized at the sixth annual luncheon, where awards will be presented to four Outstanding Seniors and two Outstanding Advocates for Seniors.
The luncheon, hosted by WKBN-TV weatherman Rich Morgan, will be Oct. 14 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, 7440 South Ave., Boardman. Tickets are $22.50. The event is open to the public, and deadline for reservations is Sept. 25.
Those nominated by members of the community for Outstanding Senior are Betty Brindiar, Canfield; Elizabeth Cole Clark, Warren; Wilford “Willie” Culler, Lisbon; Jack Gibson, Warren; Carolyn Hughes, McDonald; Carolyn Mays, Youngstown; Charles Myers, Youngstown; Geraldine Peterson, Girard; Dorothy Roberts, East Liverpool; Jean Schlecht, Warren; Ileene Shaffer-Rozich, Girard; Madeline Shanks, Poland; Ralph “Jim” Snelson, Warren; Lewis Speece, Canfield; Chuck Whitman, Canfield; and S. Paul Wright, Girard.
Nominees for Outstanding Advocate for Seniors are: Bill Adams, Youngstown; Nicole Agani, Warren; Raella Baker, Brookfield; Karen Buchmann, Salem; Michelle George, Negley; Guardian Angels of Ohio; Dean McClaine, Youngstown; Charity Ricciardi, Austintown; and Martha Whelan Murphy, Youngstown.
The inaugural Cliff Johnson Valley Legacy Memorial Award for Timeless Service to the Community will be presented honoring the memory of Bruce Gordon.
