Canfield starts season off right

The Canfield Cross Country teams opened their season Aug. 28 by participating in two different invitationals.
The meets included defending state championship teams. The high school varsity team traveled to Canton GlenOak to compete in the GlenOak Invitational with 23 boys and 16 girls teams.
On the boys side, the field included four top 12 teams from last year’s state tournament, including the DI champion Cleveland St. Ignatius.
The boys finished 13th overall. Top seven finishers for Canfield were John Hutnyan (22nd), Jeremy Hammond (79th), Nick Tocicki (85th), Zach Brown (106th), Rollin Bresson (108th) and Brandon Mirto (132nd).
The girl’s field included four top 16 teams from last year’s state tournament, including the DI team champion Magnificat and the DII team Champion Akron St. Vincent St. Mary.
The girls finished eighth overall. Top seven finishers for Canfield were Jen Love (8th), Jillian Smith (42nd), Jamie Watt (48th), Emma Lunne (58th), Nicole Tiberio (72nd), Katie Tiberio (78th) and Marla Mariucci (81st).
The Junior Varsity team travelled to McDonald to participate in the Billy Goat Challenge with 16 other teams.
The boy’s race included three top five teams from last year’s state tournament, including DIII champion Woodridge.
The boys finished 11th overall. Top seven finishers were Andy Allen (52nd), Alex Nischwitz (60th), Gary Zamary (70th), Tyler Kennedy (72nd) Alec Kennedy (73th), Calin Solomon (75th) and Michael Solomon (78th).
The girl’s race included three top 13 teams from last year’s state tournament.
The girls finished 15th overall.
The top six finishers were Brooke Lemmo (59th), Kathryn Zetts (64th), Kaitlin Dastoli (71st), Anna Louongo (72nd), Libby Urig (82nd) and Rachel Wyand (91st).
The Middle School teams also competed at the Billy Goat Challenge.
A total of 12 teams competed. The boy’s team was fourth overall.
Top seven finishers were Chase Kern (21st), Rajan Solanki (26th), Pete Crescimanno (28th), Kyle Anderson (33rd), Ben Feuer (34th), Alex Shaer (40th) and Tommy Donadee ( 41st).
The girl’s team won the overall championship.
