Vet center celebrates

Mahoning Valley Veterinary Centre will celebrate its grand opening today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The new clinic is located at 3971 Main Street, just north of the Interstate 80 and Route 46 interchange in the Ridge Creek Plaza.

The grand opening includes tours of the new clinic, featuring its new DIA 3D animation client education system, food, prizes, fun for the kids and more.

Audition to be a ghost

The Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County will host auditions for the 2010 Ghost Walk Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Packard Music Hall for actors ages 18 and older.

Band rehearsals open to the community

Musicians from the Valley are welcome to attend rehearsals with the Canfield Community Concert Band. The band meets every Tuesday evening at Canfield High School.

Federation fund raiser benefits scholarships

Youngstown Area Federation of Women’s Clubs Inc., affiliated with the Ohio and General Federation of Women’s Clubs Inc., will host its annual luncheon and fashion show Oct. 20 at the Holiday Inn in Boardman.

The event is a fundraiser for scholarships. Festivities begin at 11:30 a.m.

Welcome back dinner for women’s league

The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will host its semiannual picnic open house Monday at the Elton Beard Cabin in the Boardman Township Park.

The open house will be in conjunction with the September “Welcome Back” dinner at 6:30 p.m. and general meeting at 7:30 p.m.

All members are asked to bring a covered dish for the picnic and school supplies to donate to a local school.

The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women over the age of 18, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement.

Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs.

Preschoolers’ September meeting

The first meeting of the year for the Mothers of Preschoolers of Canfield will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Old North Church. The meetings are open to any mom with at least one child kindergarten or younger. The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. and the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.

Read tales to tails

School-aged children can sign up and read to registered therapy dogs Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. The program is designed to help develop reading skills, promote confidence and encourage a love for reading. Dogs are provided by K-9s for Compassion. Readers may bring a book of their choice. Top summer readers honored at library

Top readers of the Summer Reading 2010 program will be honored 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

Farm fresh food and fundraising

Local farmers will be paired with local chefs to create dishes from fresh, locally-grown vegetables, fruits and meats Sept. 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. at MetroParks Farm. Local theater company to perform a classic

Move Over Broadway Productions will present “The Gospel according to St. Matthew,” conceived and originally directed by John Michael Teblak with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.

This performance is being directed by Marlene Menaldi Strollo with musical direction by Jodine Pilmer and choreography by Nick Opritza.

Scheduled performances are tonight and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Michael Family Life Center Stage on Route 46 in Canfield.

Buy a silver lining ticket

That Quilt Group I Belong To is selling tickets to its annual charity quilt fundraising benefit for The Silver Lining Cancer Fund. Tickets can be purchased for $1 each and $5 for six by calling Carol Svetlak at 330-788-5122. The winning ticket will be drawn at the group’s Christmas dinner Dec. 13.

First Night Canfield is seeking volunteers for its New Year’s Eve Celebration of the Arts.

CCNC hosts golf outing

Canfield Community Net Care is hosting its ninth annual Paul Baringer Golf Classic Monday at Mill Creek Park golf course in Canfield.

Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by breakfast at 10:15 a.m.

The shotgun start begins at 10:30 a.m.

Dinner and an awards ceremony will take place at 4 p.m.

Special events include a skill hole contest, 50/50 raffle, skins game and more.

Women’s health night

The St. Elizabeth Breast Care Advisory Board presents “Women’s Health Night” from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at the St. Elizabeth Health Center Breast Care Center, 1044 Belmont Ave., Youngstown.

The event will offer a free health screening and mammogram for women 40-64 who are underinsured or uninsured and who do not have a history of breast cancer.

Quilts needed for show in September

Lordstown High School will host the Fabric Patchers Annual Quilt show Sept. 18-19. Quilts will be accepted Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the school’s library.

Church offers monthly drive-through dinner

The Western Reserve United Methodist Church on Canfield Road is offering a drive-through dinner on the first Thursday of every month starting at 4 p.m. and continuing until the food is sold out. No reservations are required, just follow the signs in the drive and someone will take your order.

The dinners are $7 and include stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Creative and dedicated students needed

First Night Canfield is seeking about a dozen sixth through 12th graders to establish a Junior FNC Board.

This board will be responsible for planning, fundraising and implementing the teen event between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. New Year’s Eve.

It requires an interest in seeing an event that would attract their friends and dedication. Make botanical pottery

Lynn Cardwell will teach students to construct a clay bowl embossed with leaf patters Tuesday at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The work will be glazed with autumn colors and ready to take home approximately three weeks after the class.
