Being a freshman can be a stressful time, but Boardman wants the transition to be a smooth one.

Boardman High School held its freshman orientation Sept. 3 for more than 350 new students. Unlike years in the past, the freshmen participated in activities put together by the Link Crew.

Assisted by 73 Link Leaders, high school juniors and seniors, the four-hour orientation introduced students to their new academic facility. The Link Leaders were required to go through a two-day training that taught them the fundamentals of leadership and how to aid the freshmen in their transition.

The Link Crew is a transitional program intended to help with the transition from middle school to high school. The Link Leaders will serve as student mentors throughout the school year. This was the school’s first year utilizing the Link Crew program.

The orientation began with a mass assembly featuring games and interactive ice breakers. Following the assembly, the freshmen were broken down into groups and taken into classrooms with their assigned mentors. There, the students introduced themselves and participated in activities to get to know each other. The day ended with a tour of the high school and its facilities.
