The 43rd annual Achievement Awards dinner and 34th annual bowling Hall of Fame induction ceremony by the Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Bowling Association will be Oct. 3 at Lucianno’s Banquet Center, 1739 S. Raccoon Rd.

The accomplishments of the association’s outstanding women during the 2009-2010 season will be recognized.

In addition, Gerry Millerleile and Elaine Smith will be inducted into the association’s Hall of Fame, for meritorious service and Star of Yesteryear categories, respectively.

Hunsbarger, Vano GYBA selections

The Greater Youngstown Bowling Association Hall of Fame selection committee chose David “Butch” Hunsbarger and John Vano for induction for 2010.

Hunsbarger and Vano will be enshrined at this year GYBA banquet on Sept. 19 at Mahoning Country Club in Girard.

Bulldog 100

The Poland All-Sports Booster Club will conduct a Bulldog 100, a maximum 100-ticket raffle with a chance to win up to $3,500.

Golf co-champs

Team No. 5 and team No. 7 finished as co-champions of the St. Christine Golf League played at Mill Creek Park.

Members of Team No. 5 were Mickey Popovec (captain), Mark Popovec, John Morris, Tom Hricko, Michael Popovec, Ed Hernan and Jim Hlebak.

Playing on Team No. 7 were John Koranicki (captain), Bill Morgante, Craig Ziak, Dave Rickert, Bob Regula and Danny Sciortino.

Kuchar shoots 64; sits atop the leaderboard

LEMONT, Ill.

Already having his best season, Matt Kuchar got off to his best start of the year Thursday in the BMW Championship. A mystery season for Tiger Woods took another unexpected turn.

Kuchar, who won the opening FedEx Cup playoff event to position himself for the $10 million bonus, wasted no time putting his name atop the leaderboard. He finished with an 18-foot birdie putt for a 7-under 64 and a one-shot lead over Ryan Moore.

Ian Poulter of England, who has finished in the top 10 only once since winning the Match Play Championship in February, had a 66.

Czinder gets look

YOUNGSTOWN

Former Phantom forward Nick Czinder will compete with the Columbus Blue Jackets rookie camp at the Traverse City Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, MI.

The tournament will be played Sept. 10-15 and there will be eight other NHL clubs present at the tournament.

Czinder is 6-foot-5, 215 pounds.

Cavendish wins 12th stage of Spanish Vuelta

LLEIDA, Spain

Mark Cavendish of England won the 12th stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Thursday, and Igor Anton of Spain retained the overall lead.

Cavendish finished the 107.2-mile leg from Andorra la Vella to Lleida in 4 hours, 30 seconds after timing his final sprint to edge Tyler Farrar and Matthew Goss.
