YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning County commissioners have awarded a $668,000 contract to A.P. O’Horo Co. of Liberty for the widening of Bailey Road to accommodate the $70 million Patriot Special Metals mill that is under construction in North Jackson.

The widening is being funded by grants from the Ohio Department of Development and the Ohio Public Works Commission.

Last month, the commissioners awarded a $182,608 sanitary sewer contract and a $52,272 water supply line contract to Dave Sugar Excavating Inc. of Petersburg, with both installations to serve Patriot.

The mill will produce specialty metals for many industries, including the nuclear and aerospace industries. It will have 50 to 60 employees when it is fully operational.

On Thursday, the commissioners also authorized a $15,000 sponsorship grant from the county’s Convention and Visitors’ Bureau to the Butler Institute of American Art for its exhibit of paintings, drawings and prints by Ronnie Wood, guitarist for the Rolling Stones, which runs from Sept. 21 to Nov. 21.

They also authorized a $3,000 support grant from the CVB to the Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce Tourism Bureau for the regional Joy of Christmas Festival and Light Show between Nov. 18 and Jan. 2 at Firestone Park in Columbiana.

The CVB monies come from the county’s hotel bed tax.

The commissioners retroactively approved the closing of Indianola Road between Market Street and Southern Boulevard in Boardman from this past Tuesday until Sept. 21 for a Youngstown Water Department construction project.

They also approved the closing of Unity Road between Calla and Middletown roads in Springfield Township on Tuesday and Wednesday for a culvert replacement.

Commissioners Anthony T. Traficanti and John A. McNally IV took the actions, with Commissioner David N. Ludt absent.
