The majority whip of the U.S. House of Representatives will attend the Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League’s annual dinner tonight. U.S. Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, the No. 3 ranking Democrat in the House, will speak at the dinner at the MetroPlex Conference Center. A reception will be at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. The dinner is the league’s annual fundraiser, said Thomas Conley, league president.
Death was homicide
SALEM
The death of a 7-month-old boy has been ruled a homicide.
Dr. William Graham, the Columbiana County coroner, issued the ruling. Derek A. Dennison died at Salem Community Hospital’s emergency room early July 23. The child was in an “unresponsive” state when he arrived at the hospital. Efforts to revive him failed, and he was pronounced dead.
Fran Rudibaugh, an investigator for the coroner, said the boy died of blunt trauma.
Sobriety checkpoint
The Mahoning County Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force will have increased impaired-driving enforcement, enforcing zero tolerance for impaired offenders.
A sobriety checkpoint will be conducted in the county from 11 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday.
Funding for the extra patrols is available from a grant from U.S. Department of Transportation, Ohio Department of Public Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Goshen Township Police District.
Road rage reported

A 16-year-old girl reported to police a case of road rage in the Southern Park Mall parking lot. The New Waterford teen was a passenger in the car of her 17-year-old female friend about 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The car jerked forward at a stop sign, and the driver of a tan Chevrolet sport- utility vehicle behind the car began following it aggressively around the parking lot, according to reports.
When the car stopped outside J.C. Penney, a male came out of the SUV toward them, reached into the driver’s-side front door of the car and pulled the keys out of the ignition, tossing the keys to the side. The male screamed obscenities at both teens before returning to his SUV and driving away on U.S. Route 224, police said.
Stolen credit cards
BOARDMAN
Police arrested a 37-year-old Youngstown man Wednesday morning, accusing him of using stolen credit cards.
Donald J. Patterson is charged with misuse of a credit card and four counts of receiving stolen property.
Boardman officers arrived at the Shell gas station on U.S. Route 224 about 4 a.m. after a call that a man, later identified as Patterson, was trying to buy three cartons of cigarettes for $167.78 with a credit card not in his name, police said.
Reports said that earlier in the morning, Patterson had attempted to buy $1,707 and $131 worth of merchandise from the Boardman Walmart and BP Uni-Mart, respectively.
He was taken to Mahoning County jail in lieu of $12,500 bond.
