The “Greatest” just hit the century mark.
One hundred area golfers have signed up to try their luck and claim the title of “Greatest Golfer of the Valley” before Wednesday’s deadline. That figure shows the popularity of local golf.
“For a first-year event, we’re thrilled to hit 100 golfers,” said Vindicator Editor Todd Franko. “Many players were thrilled to talk about the need to bring back an all-Valley competitive golf event, and we think we have a hit with this.”
John Diana, the golf pro at Trumbull Country Club — which along with Mill Creek will host the opening round of the tournament — agreed.
“There hasn’t been a local, amateur tournament like this in a long time,” he said. “I’m glad we’re finally going to have one again.”
The 100 participants are broken down into seven divisions. Those divisions range from scratch golfers, to women and seniors.
The other divisions are: 6-12 handicap, 13-17 handicap, 18-plus handicap and super seniors.
The event is hosted by The Vindicator, and Farmers National Bank. The opening rounds will be Sept. 11 and 12, with the championship round at the Lake Club on Sept. 18.
Tee times will begin at 10 a.m. at Mill Creek on Saturday, and the same time Sunday for Trumbull. Those golfers lucky enough to qualify for the championship round play a week later.
The event is open to the public, and spectators are welcome to walk the ground and watch the competition. There is no charge for viewers.
