YSU Theater to stage comedy ‘Love Song’

Youngstown State University Theater’s Blackbox Productions will stage “Love Song,” a comedy written by John Kolvenbach, for four performances.

Curtain times will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3 p.m Sunday in Spotlight Arena, inside Bliss Hall, which is on Wick Avenue, across from Butler Institute of American Art. All seats are general admission.

“Love Song,” a 2007 nominee for the Olivier Awards for Best New Comedy, is an enchanting rhapsody to the power of love.

It follows the travails of the oddball Beane, who is an exile from life. His well-meaning sister, Joan, and brother-in-law, Harry, make time for him in their busy lives, but no one can get through to him.

After a burglary at Beane’s apartment, Joan is baffled to find her brother blissfully happy and tries to unravel the story behind his mysterious new love, Molly.

“Love Song” is a student production. Randall E. Brammer, a senior from Youngstown, is the director. The cast includes Ryan Newell (Salem) as Beane; Shawna Jones (Berlin Center) as Joan; Patrick McGuire (Erie, Pa.) as Harry; Kaleigh Locketti (Austintown) as Molly and Edward Shiska (Youngstown) as Bill the waiter.

Tickets are $5 with $3 discount tickets available for all students, senior citizens, and Penguin Club members; call the box office at 330-941-3105. Season ticket coupons will be honored. Parking is available in the Wick Avenue parking deck Thursday through Saturday for a nominal fee and on Sunday parking will be available at no charge in the parking lot next to the former Wick-Pollock Inn.
