About 400 volunteers will take the day off work Friday to help others.

The 13th annual United Way Day of Caring kicks off a campaign that will last through December with the goal of raising $2.5 million.

Friday will begin with a breakfast for volunteers at 8 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Hall. Afterward, attendees will go out into the community to volunteer.

Some volunteers will take part in landscaping, painting or home repairs, and others will help in the office doing work for the 30 nonprofit organizations United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley supports.

Also, some of the volunteers from the 31 represented employers will use their unique talents to aid the community Friday afternoon. United Way President Bob Hannon said this could involve salon workers’ visiting a nursing home to style hair and paint nails for the residents

“This day is a rallying cry to get everybody involved” in the campaign, Hannon said.

United Way hopes to raise $2.5 million by the conclusion of the campaign in December.
