WEST CHESTER, Pa.
A man convicted of raping a fellow immigrant from Sierra Leone in suburban Philadelphia has now been charged with trying to hire another prison inmate to kill her.
Foday Kanu, 37, is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Tuesday in Montgomery County.
The former Broomall resident is serving a 16- to 32-year sentence on convictions of rape and sexual assault.
Prosecutors allege that Kanu approached another Graterford Prison inmate in April and offered $5,000 to kill the victim before his next court appearance, at which he planned to seek a new trial.
Prison authorities allege that they intercepted two letters from Kanu to a relative also seeking the death of the woman.
Defense attorney Jack McMahon said at a hearing last week that he knew nothing about the pending charges.
