YSU LIVE | Halftime thoughts

YSU redshirt freshman QB Kurt Hess has looked terrific in his first start. He's played poised and confident, getting rid of the ball quickly. He's 7 of 9 for 116 yards and one TD, the 80-yarder to Dominique Barnes.

Barnes has six catches for 107 yards and has looked like the preseason all-conference receiver he is.

Although sophomore Jamaine Cook got the start at tailback, freshman Adaris Bellamy has seen more action, carrying nine times for 26 yards. Bellamy has a little more power and may be a better fit against PSU's faster defense. Cook has carried five times for 10 yards.

Penn State came out conservatively on offense, which was obviously due to starting a true freshman at quarterback in Robert Bolden. But YSU's defense has showed a lot of encouraging signs, especially since it's going against arguably the Big Ten's best back in senior Evan Royster. Royster has just 30 yards on nine carries.

Penn State started to take control of the game in the second quarter, but it's not like the Nittany Lions are dominating the game. Two of their field goals were from 49 and 48 yards, respectively. Overall, PSU holds a 183-149 edge in total yardage at the half.
