Fitch boys soccer team off to good start
By GREG GULAS
Head coach Tim Walsh heads into his fourth season at the helm of the Falcons’ boys soccer program hoping to improve upon last year’s 4-12-1 slate and 1-6 mark in Federal League play.
Winning two of their first three contests is an early indication the program is on track and ready to accomplish that goal.
“This year’s team is without question one of the most dedicated teams I have ever coached,” said Walsh. “They are a talented group of players that comes to practice early, leave late and during their off-days, find the time to study game film on our upcoming opponents.
“The Federal League is without question one of the toughest soccer leagues in the state, but we’re ready to give it our best each and every time out.”
Missing from last year’s squad are Mike Rusu, Anthony Savko, Mike Ventura, Adam Bohr and Ricky Smith, all of whom were lost to graduation.
With four seniors and six juniors returning to the fold, the upperclass leadership void seems to have been solved.
Adam Justice, Brandon Jankowski, Brent Moyer and Joe Soriano are the returning seniors, while the six junior team members include Mike Shaffer, Trevor Yacovone, Chris Platton, twins Jared and Alex Bohr and Ross Blevins.
Eight underclassmen, including six sophomores, will also have a big say in how successful a season the Falcons have in 2010. The sophomores are Ben Jankowski, Ken Kilpatrick, Kyle Kosco, Vince Ortenzio, Keanu Shelton and Corey Spencer. The two freshmen are Nate Bowlen and Nick Sheeley.
