Singers needed for Canfield Fair service
The Canfield Fair Choir will perform Sunday during the 9:30 a.m. Canfield Fair Ecumenical worship service. Singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing. A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service.
Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, assisted by Margaret Fieger and Barbara Fieger.
Canfield moms host carnival pavilion
Mothers of Preschoolers of Canfield will host a fall kick-off carnival at Boardman Park’s Chester Long pavilion Sept. 11 from noon to 3 p.m. There will be free food, games and prizes for the whole family, including gift cards from local businesses and family-themed gift baskets.
Preschoolers’ September meeting
The first meeting of the year for the Mothers of Preschoolers of Canfield will be Sept. 14 at 9:30 a.m. at the Old North Church. The meetings are open to any mom with at least one child kindergarten or younger. The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. and the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.
Read tales to tails
School-aged children can sign up and read to registered therapy dogs Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. The program is designed to help develop reading skills, promote confidence and encourage a love for reading. Dogs are provided by K-9s for Compassion. Readers may bring a book of their choice. Top summer readers honored at library
Top readers of the Summer Reading 2010 program will be honored 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.
Splash down activities are also planned.

Before hitting the books, stop by the Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and match celebrities with they colleges they graduated from and win a prize during library hours in September.
Farm closes for Fair
Metroparks Farm will close during the Canfield Fair, but you can visit the farm at Old McDonald’s Barn on the fairgrounds.
For fresh food
Local farmers will be paired with local chefs to create dishes from fresh, locally-grown vegetables, fruits and meats Sept. 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. at MetroParks Farm. The cost for the event is $50 and will go to benefit Mill Creek MetroParks’ agricultural education programs for children. To make a reservation, call 330-702-3000.
Buy a silver lining ticket
That Quilt Group I Belong To is selling tickets to its annual charity quilt fundraising benefit for The Silver Lining Cancer Fund. Tickets can be purchased for $1 each and $5 for six by calling Carol Svetlak at 330-788-5122. The winning ticket will be drawn at the group’s Christmas dinner Dec. 13.
The quilt can be viewed at the group’s Shop Owners Night 6 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Western Reserve Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road. Admission is $2. Door prizes, 50/50 drawing and free refreshments will be available.
Local theater company to perform a classic
Move Over Broadway Productions will present “The Gospel according to St. Matthew,” conceived and originally directed by John Michael Teblak with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.
This performance is being directed by Marlene Menaldi Strollo with musical direction by Jodine Pilmer and choreography by Nick Opritza.
Scheduled performances are Friday, Sept. 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Michael Family Life Center Stage on Route 46 in Canfield.
The cost is $15 for adults and $12 for students and senior citizens. There is no reserved seating. Call 330-533-8789 for tickets.
Get a flu shot at the fair
Walgreens will offer seasonal flu shots at its location in the fairgrounds during the Canfield Fair.
The cost is $29.99, cash only or the co-pay of Medicare. The shots will be available every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Walgreens will be located at the corner of Miller and Kohler.
The AARP/Wellness bus will be on location through Monday and offering screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, bone density, glucose and body mass index from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Library closed for Labor Day
All branches of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.
Show your spirit
Bob Davis Fairway Ford will paint the back and side of car windows with Canfield pride and spirit notes Sept. 9 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the dealership located on the corner of state Route 224 and Cardinal Drive. The event is free, but any donations will benefit Canfield extracurricular activities.
Mill Creek ABWA meeting in Canfield
The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its Sept. 14 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield at 6 p.m.
The menu will include stuffed cabbage, chicken francaise, potatoes, vegetables, salads, cake and beverages for $16.50.

Have fun and watch the sun set at the farm
Bring the entire family to MetroParks Farm Sept. 18 from 5-8 p.m. for a fall celebration. Ride a hay wagon pulled by draft horses, visit with farm animals, explore the AgVenture barn, get lost in a giant corn maze, sample cider and homemade apple butter and roast marshmallows over a campfire. Young children can search for toys in a haystack. Older children can compete in a sack race and adults can try an egg toss. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the sunset while folk singer John Mosey performs.
CCNC hosts golf outing
Canfield Community Net Care is hosting its ninth annual Paul Baringer Golf Classic Sept. 13 at Mill Creek Park golf course in Canfield.
Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by breakfast at 10:15 a.m.
The shotgun start begins at 10:30 a.m.
Dinner and an awards ceremony will take place at 4 p.m.
Special events include a skill hole contest, 50/50 raffle, skins game and more.

Women’s health night
The St. Elizabeth Breast Care Advisory Board presents “Women’s Health Night” from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at the St. Elizabeth Health Center Breast Care Center, 1044 Belmont Ave., Youngstown.
The event will offer a free health screening and mammogram for women 40-64 who are underinsured or uninsured and who do not have a history of breast cancer.

Quilts needed for show in September
Lordstown High School will host the Fabric Patchers Annual Quilt show Sept. 18-19. Quilts will be accepted Sept. 17 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the school’s library.
There is nonrefundable $5 entry fee. Proceeds go the Shop of the Cop. Registration forms can be picked up at the door Sept. 17 only.

Church offers monthly drive-through dinner
The Western Reserve United Methodist Church on Canfield Road is offering a drive-through dinner on the first Thursday of every month starting at 4 p.m. and continuing until the food is sold out. No reservations are required, just follow the signs in the drive and someone will take your order.
The dinners are $7 and include stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans and a brownie.
Band rehearsals open to the community
Musicians from the Valley are welcome to attend rehearsals with the Canfield Community Concert Band. The band meets every Tuesday evening at Canfield High School.

First Night Canfield is seeking volunteers for its New Year’s Eve Celebration of the Arts.

Creative and dedicated students needed
First Night Canfield is seeking about a dozen sixth through 12th graders to establish a Junior FNC Board.
This board will be responsible for planning, fundraising and implementing the teen event between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. New Year’s Eve.
It requires an interest in seeing an event that would attract their friends and dedication. Make botanical pottery
Lynn Cardwell will teach students to construct a clay bowl embossed with leaf patters Sept. 14 at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The work will be glazed with autumn colors and ready to take home approximately three weeks after the class.
