1945: Japan formally surrenders in ceremonies aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, ending World War II.
Ho Chi Minh declares Vietnam an independent republic. (Ho dies on this date in 1969.)
1969: In what some regard as the birth of the Internet, two connected computers at the UCLA pass test data through a 15-foot cable.

1985: The 139th annual Canfield Fair thunders down the homestretch, with four-day attendance of 375,000. The record for a five-day fair is more than 500,000.
1970: Three men are arrested and a variety of weapons seized after a Youngstown policeman was beaten while trying to break up a fight between youths and members of the Chosen Few motorcycle gang on E. Delason Avenue.
More than 700 people attend a dinner meeting at the Mahoning Country Club in support of a medical school in Youngstown. Dr. John D. Millett, chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, attended and said he was surprised at the turnout.
1960: Winds of nearly 60 mph sweep through the Youngstown area, downing trees and damaging tents at the Canfield Fair.
The 114th annual Canfield Fair breaks first-day attendance records with a total attendance of 30,337 against the 1959 record of almost 29,000.
1935: Col. Wade C. Christy of Youngstown is elected president of the veterans of the 37th Division during their state convention in Youngstown.
A uniform 5:30 closing hour for the fall season is inaugurated by most downtown Youngstown stores, including major department stores and others affiliated with the Retail Merchants Board of the Chamber of Commerce.
