State panel chairman

Judge Thomas A. Swift of Trumbull County Probate Court has been elected chairman of the Ohio Judicial Conference. His two-year term began Oct. 1.

The Ohio Judicial Conference, a state entity in the judicial branch of government, includes all 725 Ohio judges as members and is operated by a staff of 10.

Through the Judicial Conference, Ohio judges consider issues of mutual concern and to improve the administration of justice.

Judge Swift will help lead the work of more than 20 committees of judges active in all areas from judicial ethics to alternative dispute resolution, said retired judge Mark R. Schweikert, executive director of the Judicial Conference.

Judge Swift is past president of the Ohio Association of Probate Judges and a board member of the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and serves on the board of governors of the American Judges Association, among others.

Another Judicial Conference officer is Judge John M. Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, first vice chairman.

DOCTORATE

Struthers graduate

Beth Anne McClure, daughter of Larry and Linda McClure of Struthers, received her doctorate in chemistry from Ohio University, Athens.

After graduating as valedictorian from Struthers in 2002, McClure attended John Carroll University in Cleveland and graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a minor in physics in 2006.

While at John Carroll, she was awarded the Clare Boothe Luce Scholarship from 2004 to 2006. During her studies at Ohio University, McClure received a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship from 2006 to 2009. She is a member of the American Chemical Society and Alpha Chi Sigma Chemistry Fraternity.

In December, she will begin employment as a chemist postdoctoral fellow in the physical biosciences division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, Calif.

McClure is the granddaughter of Philip McClure, William Schwager, the late Viola McClure and the late Ann Marie Schwager.
