Penalty kick shootout at sectional finals

The Boardman boys soccer team went to Canfield to face the district’s No. 1 seed in the sectional finals Oct. 21 and came up one goal short in a 3-2 loss.

The early lead went to Boardman when junior Matt Horvatich scored off an assist from senior Zaire Morrison. Canfield evened the score at 1-1 shortly before halftime. The Cardinals took a lead early in the second half after they were awarded a penalty kick.

Canfield held the 2-1 lead until Horvatich assisted Morrison on Boardman’s tying goal with little more than three minutes remaining in the game. Both teams were held scoreless in the first 15- minute overtime period and again in the second 15-minute session.

After 110 minutes of even scoring, the teams faced off in a five player penalty kick shoot-out.

Canfield took a 1-0 lead in the shoot-out after Boardman missed its first attempt, however Morrison was able to connect on his goal in the second round of kicks and the Spartans evened the penalty kick total at one goal apiece. Shen senior replacement Goal keeper blocked the Cardinals’ second attempt.

Each team made both of their shots in the third and forth rounds as junior Christian Silvestri and Horvatich kept the Spartans knotted with the Cardinals 3-3 with the final round of kicks remaining.

The Spartans’ final penalty kick went over the crossbar, while Canfield’s Jon Hutnyan scored the fourth penalty kick for the Cardinals giving his team the victory for the sectional title.

Goalie Chris Tokarsky logged 13 saves in the contest.

The Spartans finished the season with a 8-7-3 record, while Canfield is now 15-2.

Boardman frosh beat Canton McKinley

Quarterback Phil DiIanni threw for 175 yards to lead the Boardman freshman football team to a 28-8 win over Canton McKinley Saturday.

DiIanni threw a 65-yard touchdown to Josh Hart and also rushed for over 50 yards and a touchdown. Ivan Adu-Poku scored on a carry of 8 yards.

On defense, Stephen Roth recovered a fumble in the end zone to complete the scoring. The defense was led by linebacker Rob Amicone.

Glenwood Middle tops Poland

The Boardman Glenwood Middle School eighth-grade volleyball team defeated Poland 28-26 and 25-22.

Amanda Lipke had four aces, four kills, three digs and one block. Katie Davis has eight assists, two digs and one kill. Hope Landers had two aces, two kills and two digs. Brittany Chamberlin had five digs.

The seventh-grade volleyball team defeated Hubbard 25-11 and 25-4.

Krista Johnson has 13 aces and four kills. Katie Platt had five aces, two assists and one kill. Elli Hritz had three aces, three kills and one dig. Dara Genovese had five assists and one kill.

BGMS downs Center

The BGMS eighth-grade volleyball team defeated Center 25-18 and 25-22 Oct. 18.

Katie Davis had 17 assists and one kill. Hope Landers had five kills and four aces. Amanda Lipke had seven kills and one dig. Amanda Moss had five kills and one dig.

The BGMS seventh-grade team defeated Center 25-17 and 25-17.

Krista Johnson had five aces and three kills. Dara Genovese had four aces and four assists. Bailey Brandt had three kills and one ace.

Runners get sixth at regionals

Senior Eddie Adu-Poku and freshmen Mark Hadley and Alan Burns qualified for the regional championships with top 20 finishes Saturday at districts held at Malone University in Canton.

Hadley finished 10th overall in a time of 16:52, Adu-Poku was 14th at 17:07 and Burns was 19th in a time of 17:18. The team just missed qualifying by a slim seven points with a sixth-place finish.

Freshman Justin Maroni ran a personal best 18:05 to finish 46th out of 112 varsity runners. Other Spartans that ran were sophomore Sam Sheronovich, who was 49th overall in a time of 18:10, classmate Pete Stafford was 53rd in a time of 18:18 and senior Corey Zell was 63rd overall in 18:29.

BGMS tops Liberty

The BGMS eighth-grade volleyball team defeated Liberty 25-5 and 25-8 Oct. 20.

Haley Landers had five aces, four assists and two kills. Katie Davis had four aces, four assists and one kill. Hope Landers had five aces and Amanda Lipke had five kills. Kelsie Stutz added three aces and two kills.

The seventh-grade volleyball team defeated Libert 29-5 and 25-20.

Krista Johnson had four aces. Hayley Eicher has three aces and one dig. Andrea Gardner had three aces. Emily Fetsko had two aces and one kill.
