Police chiefs honored

CLEVELAND

Three local police chiefs were honored by the U.S. Marshals Service.

Boardman Chief Jack Nichols, Warren Chief Timothy Bowers and Youngstown Chief Jimmy Hughes were presented the 2010 William French Smith Award for Outstanding Contributions to Cooperative Law Enforcement from the U.S. attorney general’s office.

The chiefs are part of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, which is led by the U.S. Marshals Service.

The Original Visiting Nurse Association of Youngstown is giving flu and pneumonia shots from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the office, 518 E. Indianola Ave. (South and Indianola avenues).

No appointment is necessary. Flu shots are $20; Medicare and Anthem Senior Advantage are accepted. Pneumonia vaccine will be available at a cost of $45, or Medicare is accepted.

Disorderly conduct

Canfield

The former owner of Rosetta Stone Cafe in downtown Youngstown, which closed in August, was found guilty of disorderly conduct Friday in Mahoning County Area Court and was fined $150.

Charles Sop, 65, of Windjammer Drive in Columbiana, pleaded no contest. He was charged Oct. 7 with domestic violence after an argument with his wife, who told police they were in the middle of divorce proceedings. According to a Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department report, Sop grabbed his wife by the arm and threatened her at their Caymen Bluff Road home in Canfield Township. She said she wasn’t hurt but was afraid.

The city police department will be conducting driving- under-suspension checkpoints throughout the city on five days next month, Police Chief Jimmy Hughes announced Thursday.

The announced dates are Tuesday, Nov. 10, 20, 23 and 29. Locations and times will vary and were not announced today. Police will stop motorists to determine whether they have valid driver’s licenses.

A woman was injured Thursday when her car went out of control and struck a utility pole on Lowellville Road at Center Street.

The car driven by Debra Hephner, 56, of Park Avenue, Lowellville, left the road and hit the pole at 3:47 p.m., police reported. The car rolled over in the road. She was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
