First-graders at North Elementary received fire safety and prevention training Oct. 8 from the Poland Fire Department. Education Specialist Bill O’Hara and firefighter Gio Melia talked to the students about the importance of a smoke detector and when to call 911.

The group watched a video, “Rainbow Valley Fire Department,” that discussed what to do if you are caught in a fire. O’Hara quizzed the kids on the video once it was completed. Melia geared up in his fire suit to show the students how a firefighter looks in their equipment.

The students toured the fire truck and learned about the equipment firefighters use. First-grader Morgan Klunchar didn’t know that firefighters use axes.

“I found out they use axes to break down windows,” she said.
