Neighbors | Shaiyla Hakeem .Dobbins Elementary first-grader Alaina Francis found a worm while planting flower bulbs Oct. 14. She picked it up and moved it to a safe location.

Along with their books, Dobbins students packed their backpacks with gardening gloves and small shovels for the school day on Oct. 14.

The first-grade classes of Kim Aikens and Suzanne James planted flower bulbs as a school project preparing their school’s landscape for the spring. This is the second year the classes beautified their school with floral arrangements.

Last year, the students planted multi-colored daffodils and tulips around the Dobbins school sign in the front lawn. This year, they planted flowers behind and on the sides of the school.

Dobbins PTO members were on hand to help each student plant three bulbs. Aikens placed the bulbs where they should be planted and the students followed behind, with shovel in hand, to dig a hole for the plant.

The first-graders won’t know the type of flowers they planted until spring when they bloom.
