WARREN

Randy Law, an independent candidate for the Ohio House 64th District seat, has withdrawn from the race.

Law, of Warren, sent a letter Thursday to the Trumbull County Board of Elections stating he officially was withdrawing as a candidate.

Law didn’t provide an explanation in the letter for quitting the race less than a week before Tuesday’s election. He could not be reached Thursday by The Vindicator.

Law served one two-year term as that district’s representative, winning the seat in the 2004 general election as a Republican. He defeated Democrat Dan Sferra of Warren, then a two-term incumbent.

Law lost his 2006 re-election bid to Democrat Tom Letson of Warren. Letson is seeking his third two-year term in this election.

Letson’s Republican challenger is Albert J. Haberstroh Jr. of Southington.

Because Law withdrew so late in the campaign, his name cannot be removed from the ballot, said Kelly Pallante, Trumbull County Board of Elections director.

There is no deadline to withdraw from this race, she said.

Votes for Law from those who cast early ballots will not be counted, Pallante said.

Those voting early will be notified by the elections board that any votes for Law won’t count because he’s no longer a candidate, Pallante said.

Also, there will be notices at polling places informing voters of Law’s decision and that his votes won’t be counted.
