A male rhinoceros calf has died hours after its birth at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.
The calf born to 18-year-old Nikki was the first live birth of an Indian rhino conceived by artificial insemination and the first from frozen-and-thawed sperm.
A previous artificial insemination of the same rhino ended with a stillbirth in 2008.
The zoo tells The Enquirer that the calf born Tuesday about 6 a.m. had a heartbeat but was not breathing on its own until staff did CPR.
Zoo staffers were with the calf when it died about 7:15 p.m. and were unable to resuscitate it.
