After 71 years in the Mahoning Valley, a local deli is expanding and taking its corned beef to a new counter.

Kravitz Delicatessen will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new caf at Poland Library, 311 S. Main St., at 10 a.m. today. The location formerly was occupied by Rosetta Stone’s “Chapters” caf , which closed in August, shortly after the downtown Rosetta Stone restaurant shut down.

“It was a real opportunity presented to us. We’d been looking to do something on the other side of town,” said owner Jack Kravitz.

The original Kravitz deli will remain on Belmont Avenue in Liberty.

Although the Poland deli still will feature pastrami and corned beef, ham and french fries also will be on the menu in addition to expanded Mediterranean and vegetarian options, Kravitz said.

“We’re not restricted by Jewish dietary laws here,” he said.

The Poland Library also has a meeting room that seats 150 to 200 people, and Kravitz will cater events in that hall, he said. The deli has done catering out of its Belmont Avenue location for five years, he added.

The continuation of an operating caf is important to the library, said Janet Loew, public-relations director for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

“Libraries are changing,” she said. “It’s not just about books; it’s about community gathering spaces. The deli furthers that goal of the library branch and serving the community.”

The deli’s official grand opening is 9 a.m. Friday. This weekend, the deli will run a special at both locations: buy two sandwiches, get one free.

The deli’s regular hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The hours may change based on the passage of the library levy on next week’s ballot, Loew added.
