A man who fought arrest after a rape accusation was to be arraigned this morning in Campbell Municipal Court.

John Garlinger, 59, of Andrews Avenue was in the Mahoning County jail over the weekend after his arrest Friday, police said.

Police said they were called to a home on Chambers Street where they took a report of a sexual assault from a 24-year-old city woman.

She told police Garlinger came to her home around 6:55 p.m. Friday and assaulted her when she tried to stop him from fondling her.

Three officers, including the canine team, went to Garlinger’s home on Andrews.

At first, Garlinger would not open the door, the police report says.

Then, he told police, “come in the door and I’ll take your heads off.”

When he was told the dog would be coming in, he said, “I will drop the dog then drop you,” the report says.

When Garlinger did open the door, he had a crowbar in one hand and a kitchen knife in the other, the report says. Police drew their guns.

Garlinger put down the crowbar and knife but still wouldn’t cooperate with police as they tried to arrest him, the report says.

Garlinger fell and hit his head on a table, it says.

Garlinger was taken to the city’s police station and booked, then an ambulance took him to Northside Medical Center.

He was released from the hospital and taken to the jail Saturday, reports indicate.

He is charged with rape, a first-degree felony; aggravated menacing, a fifth-degree felony; and obstruction of official business, a second-degree misdemeanor.
