Penguins send down Tangradi, Hutchinson
PITTSBURGH
The Pittsburgh Penguins have assigned forward Eric Tangradi and defenseman Andrew Hutchinson to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, clearing the way for forward Arron Asham to be activated for Wednesday’s game at Tampa Bay.
Asham has been out since injuring his left shoulder late in the preseason. Forward Jordan Staal remained on the injured list Monday with infections in his right foot, but he could be ready soon.
Staal couldn’t work out during the offseason and sat out training camp, but he has recovered much faster than expected since he began skating two weeks ago. He had not been on skates since the Penguins’ second-round playoff loss to Montreal in May.
Tangradi had one goal and one assist in nine games. Hutchinson had one assist in five games.
Nigerian federation says lawsuit dismissed
LAGOS, Nigeria
A Nigerian official says a lawsuit against the national soccer federation has been dismissed. Such a step could help the country avoid suspension by FIFA.
Musa Amadu, the federation’s acting secretary general, told The Associated Press the organization will send a letter to FIFA to say the lawsuit has been dropped. The suit was filed by the national players’ organization and sought to annul recent federation elections.
FIFA suspended Nigeria on Oct. 4 because of the lawsuit and other matters, saying the federation had been compromised by government interference.
The international governing body later temporarily lifted the ban.
Hammer throw champ Kozmus back to action
LJUBLJANA, Slovenia
Olympic hammer throw champion Primoz Kozmus is coming out of retirement to defend his title at the 2012 Summer Games in London.
Kozmus said Monday he was an “athlete at heart” and wants to return to competition.
The Slovenian won gold at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and followed it up by adding the world championship title in Berlin in 2009.
Kozmus retired in October 2009, saying he had reached his peak. In a statement carried Monday by the state-run news agency STA, he said he believes he can “still give a lot to this sport.”
No final decision yet on women’s ski jump
ACAPULCO, Mexico
The IOC says it needs more time to review women’s ski jumping and other events before deciding whether to include them in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
The International Olympic Committee says it looks “favorably” on the proposed events but won’t make a final decision until after their world championships in 2011.
The IOC previously turned down women’s ski jumping for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
Women jumpers were hoping for outright approval for Sochi on Monday, but the IOC decided it still needs to assess the quality of competition at the world championships in Norway.
