Tony Porter, co-founder of A Call to Men, National Association of Men and Women committed to ending domestic violen, will be the keynot speaker for “A Few Good Men Breakfast” from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Avalon Golf and Country Club, 761 Youngstown-Kingsville Road SE.

The Youngstown Chapter of Links Inc. is sponsoring the event, which is open to all men and boys age 8 and older .

Others on the program are Rev. Dr. Louis Macklin II, pastor of Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church; Youngstown Councilman Jamael Tito Brown, D-3rd; and Detective Sgt. David Lomax of Youngstown Police Department’s Family Investigative Unit.

A full buffet breakfast will be served. Proper attire is required (no jeans or tennis shoes). Registration is required; call Sojourner House at 330-747-4040.

Library work

POLAND

Poland Library, 311 S. Main St., will be closed Nov. 15-19 while the library’s maintenance staff refinishes wood steps and floors throughout the building. The branch has extended due dates on items checked out so they will not be due until after the branch reopens. Patrons will not be charged fines for items checked out during the closure.

Book drops usually found outside the library will not be available until after Nov. 19. The library is asking patrons to keep their items until the branch reopens. Borrowers should not set books outside the library, and will be responsible for any damages to library materials. Materials can be returned at any of the other public libraries in Mahoning County.

The Boardman Council Parent-Teacher Organization and the St. Charles Borromeo Parish Social Justice Commission are sponsoring a candidate and issues from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Boardman High School cafeteria, 7777 Glenwood Ave.

Candidates from the state hours of representatives (59th, 60th and 61st districts), state senate (33rd district), county commissioner and auditor races will participate. The event is open to the public.

Representatives from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources will answer questions about Marcellus Shale drilling during a Tuesday meeting. Beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, residents can ask about oil and gas leases companies are soliciting.

The meeting will take place at the Berlin Township Fire Station at 15811 Akron-Canfield Road.

The Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative will have a “community congress” event at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, 309 North Park Ave. in Warren.

The event allows voters to discuss issues of concern with those running for political office in the Nov. 2 election.

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray has confirmed his attendance as have several other candidates. The event is free and open to the public.

NEW SPRINGFIELD

The Springfield Township Fire and EMS Auxiliaries/Associations will collect nonperishable food items and toys to be given to the Springfield Township Council of Churches and Community.

The food and toys may be dropped off from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 4 at any Springfield Township Fire Station or from 7 to 9 p.m. any Monday until Dec. 5.

An STCCC representative will be available to take monetary donations. Checks may be made payable to “STCCC.”

Northeast Ohio Labrador Retriever Rescue, a nonprofit dog rescue organization, is collecting dog food and toys through Dec. 21 to help the animals.

Dog food, treats, toys blankets and towels, laundry detergent and paper towels may be dropped off at First Federated Church, Mahoning Avenue or Gem-Young Insurance on state Route 45, both in North Jackson.

Anyone who donates will also be eligible to win a prize by leaving their name and telephone number upon making a donation.

Friends of the Hubbard Public Library sponsored its annual book sale recently and made about $3,600 for the library.

Friends continue to sponsor an ongoing sale on the shelves under the stairway in the library.

Bonnie Viele, book sale chair, said collection for next year’s fundraiser has begun. Donations of used books, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes, games and puzzles can be dropped off at the circulation desk during regular library hours. For information, call Viele at (330) 534-1394.

YOUNGSTOWN

OH WOW! The Children’s Center for Science & Technology has received a $30,000 grant from The Youngstown Foundation in support of the organization’s “Science Makes Cents” Capital Campaign.

The center will open spring 2011 after completing the renovation of the historic McCrory Building on Central Square in downtown. It will serve 25,000 to 30,000 people annually, with a large percentage of its visitors coming from local schools and after-school programs. A $3.2 million economic impact to the region is anticipated, said center officials.

OH WOW!’s mission is to foster independent thinking and enrich the lives of children by creating a welcoming environment where they can develop learning skills and knowledge through the exploration of hands-on interactive exhibits and educational programs rooted in science, technology, engineering and math.

YOUNGSTOWN

A grant from the John F. and Loretta A. Hynes Foundation will help the Beatitude House improve its apartment buildings on Fifth and Lora avenues on the city’s North Side.

The Beatitude House helps disadvantaged women and children in the Mahoning Valley and will use the $7,500 payment of a two-year grant from the foundation for renovations such as repair of the plumbing system and installation of vinyl siding. BOARDMAN

The Boardman Spartan Marching Band will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday. The annual event is a retrospective of the marching season, which includes the songs “Hey Big Spender” and “Any Way You Want It.” The concert will be in Boardman High School’s gymnasium, 7777 Glenwood Ave. Students will be dressed in costumes to match the theme of the closing number “Into, Under and Across the Sea.” Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students and free for senior citizens.

Cemetery cleanup

The caretaker at St. Stephen Cemetery is requesting that all flowers and decorations be removed by Nov. 1 to facilitate the fall leaf cleanup. Fall and winter decorations may be replaced on the graves beginning Nov. 8.
