Division Street by the Mahoning River will be closed to vehicular traffic until Nov. 6 because of the demolition of a railroad bridge on the street immediately north of the river. State Route 711 will be the primary detour route.
‘The Beat Goes On’
SALEM
The Salem Historical Society Museum, 208 S. Broadway Ave., will feature Alan Freed, the originator of the phrase “rock ’n’ roll,” during Sunday’s “The Beat Goes On” program from 1 to 4 p.m.
Freed, a 1940 graduate of Salem High School, was on the list of the first inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. The late Salem historian, Dale Shaffer, wrote that, at WJW Radio in Cleveland, he was called “King of the Moondogs” in his nighttime broadcast. Freed worked at stations in Akron, Youngstown and Cleveland. There will be showings of movies he was in and material from his school days in Salem.

The Comprehensively Pink Mahoning County Breast Cancer Awareness event that was planned for Monday at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Church, 526 W. Rayen Ave., has been canceled.
Pheasant hunt
LOWELLVILLE
Lowellville Rod and Gun Club, 6225 Quarry Road, will have a pheasant hunt at noon Sunday at the club. The event is open to hunters age 17 and younger, who must have a hunting license to participate.

Rashad William Riggins, 29, of West Lucius Avenue is in Mahoning County jail after Youngstown police charged him with possession of dangerous drugs, carrying a concealed weapon, illegal possession of a weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia and funding of drugs or marijuana trafficking stemming from an incident about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Police on patrol saw Riggins’ car parked in a vacant lot on West Lucius. When police approached, Riggins attempted to leave the vehicle and was ordered to stay in the car. Police officers said they saw a .22-caliber handgun.
After taking Riggins into custody, police said they also found a 9mm handgun, a bag of suspected marijuana and a bag of white pills believed to be a narcoticlike pain reliever in the car.
A 17-year-old female in the car told police Riggins had reached for the .22 when police shined a light on the car. The juvenile was released.
Drug charge

Police charged Douglas Crankfield, 29, of Superior Street, Youngstown, with drug trafficking after a traffic stop about noon Thursday at North State Street and Townsend.
Police on patrol observed Crankfield in his car with what appeared to be marijuana or a cocaine pipe.
They found a bag of suspected marijuana in the console, separated into six individually wrapped packages. Crankfield will appear Monday in Girard Municipal Court.
Poland open house

The Poland Historical Society will have an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The event will include pumpkin painting, mask making and other activities at the Little Red School House, 4515 Center Road. Refreshments also will be available.
