Members of the Boardman Fire Department visited Stadium Drive Elementary Oct. 7, along with their mobile fire safety classroom and a big red fire truck.

The firefighters enlightened first-graders on how to prevent fires and what to do if they are caught in a fire.

Capt. Patrick Romeo said fire safety and prevention is important to everyone, not just young students.

“We want to teach them the right things before they learn the wrong things,” Romeo said.

First-grader Karlynn Riccitelli liked climbing out the window during the fire safety drill, although she doesn’t want to ever have to climb out of her own.

An aspect of the training she will never forget deals with one of the most important necessities of life — breathing.

“Bad air is up above and the good air is down below,” Riccitelli said. “That’s why you crawl on the floor.”
