National Fire Prevention Week is officially over, but the Poland Fire Department is still teaching students how to stay safe.

Poland firefighters visited the first-graders at Dobbins Elementary Oct. 13 to teach them fire safety and prevention skills. Firefighters Gio Melia, Becky Baird, Connor O’Halloran, John Gulgas and education specialist Bill O’Hara taught students what to do and what not to do if they were caught in a fire.

As a fire safety exercise, students crawled underneath a sheet that represented smoke while exiting the classroom. They were told not to crawl on their hands and knees, but to crawl on their stomach, staying as low to the floor as possible. The students were given red fire hats and bags full of fire safety information.

The day was completed with a tour of the fire truck. O’Hara walked the students around the truck explaining what the equipment was used for and answered questions pertaining to the truck.
