Janet Polish, coordinator of the new Austintown Online and Alternative School, spoke to the members of the Rotary Club of Austintown at its Oct. 11 meeting.

She discussed the developments of Austintown’s new adventure in education, which is aimed at those students who have needs not being met by traditional education.

In only its second month, it has 65 students and is among the first in Mahoning County.

Some students are there because of emotional, health, religious and safety reasons. It serves all grades kindergarten through 12th, though most are high school students.

Classes can be done online or at school, during the day and evenings. Students can participate in sports, activities, school events and are also eligible to graduate from Austintown Fitch.

Teachers have stepped forward to help with this new program and it is showing signs of success already.

President Susan Leetch also introduced member Mark Cole, insurance agent, as the new International chairman for the Austintown Rotary.

Cole is just finishing his first year in Rotary, but will travel to El Salvador in January as part of a work team from Mahoning County Rotary clubs, getting a worldview to bring back to his membership.
