Brian Hutchinson, the new speech pathologist at Watson Elementary, has an odd way of measuring his own success.

“I know I’ve done my job well when the student no longer needs to see me.”

With a smile, Hutchinson explained further.

“My favorite moment in my career was the day that a student was doing so well that he came to say goodbye to our meetings. We were good friends, but he improved so much that his parents were thrilled, his teachers were impressed, and I had to let him go. It was great.”

Hutchinson, a Cherry Township, Pa., native, was looking for that sense of accomplishment when he entered into the University of Pittsburgh for speech pathology.

“I always wanted to help people, and this field is needed at every age, from adults to children.”

Certified to teach communication skills from kindergarten to 12th grade, Hutchinson previously worked in Austintown at Fitch High School and St. Joseph and Immaculate Heart of Mary.

“I’m a simple guy,” he explained when reflecting on his profession. “I just want to help as many kids as possible. I’ll be a success when I leave every day feeling like I made a difference.”
