Canfield’s Timko 14th at state golf

Canfield High’s Bruce “Boo” Timko shot an opening-round 80 on Friday at the Division I boys state golf championships.

Timko trails leader Michael Ricarte of Columbus St. Charles by nine shots entering today’s second and find round at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.

Timko, who is tied for 14th, had no birdies and eight bogies on the day. He shot 41 on the par-36 front nine and 39 on the par-36 back nine.

Canfield’s doubles team of Kaitlin Kaleel and Allison Pavlansky went 1-1 at the Division I girls state tennis championships.

Kaleel, a senior, and Pavlansky, a sophomore, defeated Tricia Speed and Ashley Ziegler of Cincinnati St. Ursula, 6-0, 6-0, in their first-round match at the Stickney Tennis Center at Ohio State.

In their second-round match, Kaleel-Pavlansky lost to Columbus Watterson’s Lauren Ghidotti and Katie Shepher, 6-3, 6-3.

Kaleel and Pavlansky earned second-team All-Ohio honors for their finish.

In Div. II, both local players were defeated in their first-round matches.

Chelsea Ross of Warren JFK, a senior, was defeated by senior Madison Morton of Bexley, 6-2, 6-0.

Also, Victoria Ferry of Liberty, a junior, lost to Alyssa Ritchie of Waynesville, 6-0, 6-0.

Morton lost in her second-round match to Rachel Nelson of Millersburg West Holmes, while Ritchie defeated Mollie Miller of Portsmouth.
