As their National Honor Society service project, Canfield High School seniors Olivia Johntony, daughter of John and Toni Johntony, and Bella Gullia, daughter of Chris and Jeannie Gullia, are organizing a cut-a-thon for Wigs for Kids.

The Canfield Cut-a-Thon for Wigs for Kids will be Nov. 21 from 1-4 p.m. at Pierre’s Hair Salon and Spa, 7098 Lockwood Blvd., Boardman.

Sponsors include Pierre’s Hair Salon and Spa, Canfield Belleria Express, Canfield Subway, Chili’s, Westgate Pizza, Sport’s World, Family Video, Skate Zone, Chick-fil-a, Ange Nettas, Komara Jewelry, Jillian’s, Cinemark Tinseltown USA, Dunkin’ Donuts and Walmart.

There will be a Chinese auction with baskets over $75 in value and Cookie Lee Jewelry will be sold. Proceeds will go to Wigs for Kids to sponsor children’s wigs.

Johntony’s and Gullia’s choice of a cut-a-thon for Wigs for Kids as a service project was inspired by people close to them.

“I was inspired by my boyfriend’s mom who is currently fighting breast cancer. This project seemed like the perfect time and opportunity to give back to this good cause. The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise money for this charity, but more importantly help children undergoing cancer look and feel like themselves again by providing them with wigs at no cost,” Gullia said.

“I was inspired my aunt who fought and won against breast cancer. Seeing how difficult the battle of cancer is, I wanted to do something to make that process a little easier. We both chose to give to Wigs for Kids because they are a great charity that makes and gives wigs to sick children that have lost their hair at no cost,” Johntony said.

Wigs for Kids is a nonprofit organization that helps children who have lost their hair through an illness look and feel like themselves again by providing them with human hair wigs at no cost. All the hair is donated and monetary donations are used to provide wigs to the children free of charge.

Every senior member of the Canfield High School National Honor Society is required to organize a service project. The service project does not have to be a fundraiser, but something that will have a positive impact and benefit others.

“We started organizing our event in August by putting up posters, getting donations and planning out the details of our event. So far, it has been very rewarding to see how generous the community is, and it is rewarding being able to help a great cause.

“Through our event we hope to provide many children undergoing illness with wigs through hair donations and proceeds from the Chinese auction. We also hope to educate others about this great cause and charity that is not well known,” Johntony said.

According to Johntony and Gullia, anyone is welcome to attend the event, not just people donating their hair.

“We would just like people to know that they do not need to donate hair to attend the event. People are welcome to stop in at Pierre’s from 1-4 on Nov. 21, to participate in the Chinese auction and purchase Cookie Lee Jewelry.”

Proceeds from jewelry sales will also go to Wigs for Kids. All hair donations are greatly appreciated. Hair must be a minimum of 10 inches. Anyone wishing to donate their hair must call ahead at 330-272-4022 or 330-881-2322. Also, after donated hair is cut off, Pierre’s Hair Salon is giving a complimentary haircut to each individual who donates hair, according to Johntony.
