3 men hurt while ‘playing’ with gunpowder

Three men were injured in an incident involving gunpowder from fireworks about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on James Lane. Police and fire departments responded.

Police said Jovan Anderson, 22, and Shane Newton, 20, both of James Lane, and James Mullins, 21, of Fifth Street, Struthers, were “playing” with gunpowder from fireworks that they took apart and put into a glass jar.

The men were making “trails” of powder, and it ignited when a cigarette was placed close by. They were injured by flying glass and went to Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

A 16-year-old mother at the residence also took her 5-month-old baby to the hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation. Trumbull County Children Services was contacted.
