1836: Sam Houston is inaugurated as the first constitutionally elected president of the Republic of Texas.

1934: Bank robber Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd is shot to death by federal agents at a farm in East Liverpool, Ohio.

1962: President John F. Kennedy announces a quarantine of all offensive military equipment shipped to Cuba, following the discovery of Soviet-built missile bases on the island.

1979: The U.S. government allows the deposed Shah of Iran to travel to New York for medical treatment — a decision that precipitates the Iran hostage crisis.

1986: President Ronald Reagan signs into law sweeping tax-overhaul legislation.

1985: Pucci Castor and Scott Carney are crowned Youngstown State University Homecoming queen and king.

A group of parents files suit in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court seeking to have six players reinstated to the LaBrae High School football team, claiming the coach exceeded his authority in dismissing them from the team for alleged violations of the student code of conduct.

1970: Youngstown State University appoints Alfred L. Bright, assistant professor of art, to the newly created position of director of black studies, with the responsibility for establishing a black studies program.

Three former Youngs-town area high school athletes, Jim Fuda of Cardinal Mooney, Patsy DiTommaso of Girard and William Gela of Columbiana, are on the first squad of Case Western Reserve’s football team.

1960: Fire sweeps through the huge General American Transportation Corp.’s Masury plant, with damage estimated at $3 million to the Tank Car Division.

Mrs. Joseph P. Kennedy, mother of Sen. John F. Kennedy, Democratic presidential candidate, is a guest of the Trumbull County Federated Democratic Women’s Club at the Warner Hotel in Warren. Some 700 attend.

1935: Tempers flare in City Council chambers as Youngstown traffic engineer Alexander L. Conquest accuses traffic commissioner Carl Olson and the police department of doing nothing about growing traffic problems for 20 years.

G.E. Roudebush, superintendent of Youngstown schools, says 69 painters and carpenters have been working on WPA projects in city schools since Sept. 1.
