Robber gets 5 years

LISBON

Jason E. Vantilburg, 38, of Kent Street, East Liverpool, has been sentenced to five years in prison for robbery.

The Columbiana County prosecutor’s office said he was charged with a robbery at the Rich Oil station in Wellsville at 12:45 a.m. May 15, 2009. He pushed the female clerk to the floor and took $145 from the register.

He returned to the station at 5:15 a.m. July 19, 2009, and asked the clerk to change a dollar bill. The clerk recognized him from the robbery and called police, who arrested him a short distance from the store.

He was on parole at the time of the Wellsville robbery for robbing a drive-through in East Liverpool in 2004.

Work on courthouse

YOUNGSTOWN

A crane is scheduled to remove the copper statues representing Justice, Strength and Authority and Law from the roof of the Mahoning County Courthouse at 1 p.m. Friday, weather permitting, said architect James Yoder of the 4M Co. in Boardman.

The removal is part of an emergency stabilization of the deteriorated rooftop statue pedestal at the century-old landmark. The statues will be in off-site storage pending restoration of the courthouse.

Town-hall forum

HANOVERTON

The National Revolt Spending Tour is slated to appear at The Spread Eagle Tavern, 10150 Plymouth St., for a town-hall forum between 7 and 8 p.m. Sunday.

The forum is part of a national effort to inform Americans about federal spending.

On Sunday, a seven-city tour in Ohio will lead up to the Nov. 2 election.

Festival of bands

SALEM

The Salem Band Boosters presents the 15th annual Salem Area Festival of Bands at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Reilly Stadium.

The featured bands are Columbiana, Crestview, Leetonia, Lisbon, United Local, Western Reserve and Salem. There will be a special performance by the Malone University “Pioneers” Marching Band.

Admission is $5 per person. Children 10 and younger get in free.

Model Blocks effort

YOUNGSTOWN

A local neighborhood group is seeking volunteers for its Model Blocks program from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. is working with Tabernacle Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Austintown to paint homes in the Idora neighborhood. Volunteers will work with residents to scrape and paint several homes on the 700 block of LaClede Avenue, between Glenwood Avenue and Colfax Street.
