WHO ARE YOU?

WHO ARE YOU?

The following are tips for beginning genealogists.

1. Compile what records you have.

2. Interview family members and try to get specific information, such as dates and locations, from them.

3. Narrow your focus to researching one branch of the family tree at a time.

4. Search online for websites to help discover public records. Some, such as FamilySearch.org, are free, and others, such as Ancestry.com, are paid.

5. Visit the library for access to databases and free programs. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County hosts volunteers from the Mahoning County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society from 1 to 4 p.m. every Thursday at the main branch, 305 Wick Ave.

6. Contact the Mahoning County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society for tips and guidance by sending e-mails to MCCOGS@zoominternet.net.
