No. 4 seeds Girard, Lordstown advance in volleyball tournament

Salem

The Girard High volleyball team advanced to the sectional finals of the Division III sectional tournament with a win over Badger on Monday at Salem High School.

The Indians (14-9) won 25-4, 25-17, 25-6 against Badger (8-15) as the No. 4 seed. Badger was No. 10.

McKenzie Patterson had 30 points for the Indians, which is a new school record, and tied a school record with 14 aces. She also had four digs.

Bryanna Jay and Morgan Walters each had seven kills and Hayley Spalla had 17 assists.

Girard will play Brookfield Thursday at 6 p.m. with the winner advancing to the district semifinal.

Other Division III

Salem

Mineral Ridge defeated South Range 25-20, 25-23, 25-20 to advance in the Salem district. The Tigers (14-7) advanced to the sectional final and will play Springfield on Thursday at 6 p.m. South Range finished the year at 6-17.

The No. 1 seed Waterloo High allowed only 17 points in three matches against Ursuline (6-16) who were seeded as the No. 11 team. Waterloo won 25-8, 25-4, 25-5 to win. Waterloo will play East Palestine on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the sectional final.

Leavittsburg

Champion was defeated by Grand Valley 25-21, 25-11, 25-17 in the first round of the Division III tournament’s LaBrae District. Champion finished the year at 10-8.

Mineral Ridge and LaBrae each had byes in the first round and will play in round two. LaBrae will play Grand Valley today at 7 p.m. Mineral Ridge will play Middlefield Cardinal on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Division IV Lordstown 25-25-25, Crestview 12-23-23

Lisbon

The Red Devils (17-6) advanced as the No. 4 seed with the victory. Crestview 5-18) was the No. 12 seed.

Allison Hajnosz had 12 assists and 16 points for Lordstown. Heather Darocha had nine kills and Sarah Cash had 25 blocks.

Chelsea Caudill had nine points for Crestview. Teammate Morgan Newbauer had 22 assists and 14 digs, while Shanelle Davner had 11 kills and seven blocks.

Western Reserve 25-25-25, Southern 10-20-18

Lisbon

The No. 8 seeded Blue Devils (14-8) got 16 points, 16 digs and 13 blocks from Casey Stevens in the match.

Sissy Stubbs had six points, seven kills and 19 digs while Hannah Shrader had six points, six blocks, two aces and 10 kills.

For Southern (11-11) Maddy Dowling had five points and two aces. Teammate Heather Sell had seven assists and two points, while Natalie Saling had seven points, four kills and three blocks.

Sebring 25-25-21-25, Heartland Christian 18-13-25-19

Lisbon

The Trojans (4-14) upset the No. 5 seeded Heartland Christian squad in the first round.

Elaina Jurica had 12 assists and 25 sets. Taylor Ward had 10 blocks and Taylor Hannah had 15 points, six aces and 10 kills.

BADGER DIVISION IV

KINSMAN

Bristol defeated Southington, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22, 18-25, 15-13, as Morgan Powell had 19 assists.

Also, Bloomfield beat Fairport Harbor 26-24, 25-22, 24-26, 25-8.

Division I Canfield 25-25-25, Chaney 7-15-8

STOW

Canfield (16-6) advanced and will meet Copley, Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Chaney finished with a 10-13 record.
