Johnson-Koulianos sets Iowa receiving record

When Iowa receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos caught four passes for 70 yards against Michigan on Saturday, he became the new Hawkeyes’ career leader in receiving yards.

A graduate of Cardinal Mooney High, Johnson-Koulianos has now caught passes for 2,274 yards to surpass Tim Dwight’s 2,271.

His four receptions against Michigan resulted in a career-high three touchdowns.

The senior now has 151 receptions in an Iowa uniform and is near the school career mark of 157 by Kevin Kasper.

Kuharich gets ace

Ray Kuharich, Sr. used a seven-iron to shoot a hole in one on the 136-yard No. 15 at Reserve Run Golf Course.

Coins for Cancer

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.

The Slippery Rock University women’s soccer team will honor breast cancer awareness month when it hosts the annual Coins for Cancer game Oct. 27.

All proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Kickoff for the match against the University of Charleston is set for 1 p.m. at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

Fans are encouraged to clean out their spare change and bring it to the game where representatives from the women’s soccer team will collect the donations.

USHL players named

Chicago, IL

Three players received weekly honors in the United States Hockey League.

Forward Vinny Saponari of the Dubuque Fighting Saints was picked the offensive player of the week; defenseman Jordan Oesterle of the Sioux Falls Stampede was selected the defensive player of the week; and Joel Vienneau of the Muskegon Lumberjacks earned the USHL goaltender of the week award.

Saponari tallied six points (2g, 4a) and a plus-four rating.

Oesterle posted three points (1g, 2a) and a plus-four rating in two wins for the Stampede.

Vienneau earned his first USHL victory by stopping all 19 shots he faced in the 6-0 shutout against Sioux City.

Els wants to travel less, focus more on PGA

Ernie Els will concentrate on playing the PGA Tour next year.

Els, in Bermuda for Tuesday’s start of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, says he feels he can still win another major.

“I feel really fresh,” said Els. “I feel like I can still achieve things in this game, and I want to achieve things in this game.

“You’re going to really see a lot different schedule next year. I’m going to play a lot more in the States. I’ll still do the odd trip over to Europe and so on, but it’s not going to be what I used to be doing.”

Italy won’t accept rematch with Serbia

Italy says it won’t re-play the Euro 2012 qualifier against Serbia that had to be abandoned because of fan violence last week.

Antonello Valentini, the head of the Italian soccer federation, says accepting Serbia’s request for a replay would be like giving “a gift” to the Serbia team.
