Canfield doubles duo wins district tennis championship

OBERLIN
Canfield High’s doubles team of Allison Pavlansky and Kaitlin Kaleel won the Division I district tennis championship on Saturday.
The Canfield duo defeated Victoria and Mandy Marchant of Kenston, 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (1), in the championship match at Oberlin College.
“The championship was between two evenly-matched teams,” said Canfield coach Rob Stephens. “[Pavlansky and Kaleel] stayed strong, though, and got the win.”
Earlier, the Canfield team defeated Michelle Djohan and Kelsey Wanhainen of Westlake, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, in the semifinals.
They will go to the state meet in Columbus next weekend as a No. 1 seed.
“There’s not an easy match at state,” said Stephens, “but as a No. 1 seed we’re hoping for a good draw.”
DIVISION II
CANTON
Chelsea Ross of Warren JFK and Victoria Ferry of Liberty are going to the state tournament.
Ross defeated Lydia Colvin of Orange, 7-6 (0), 6-4, in Saturday’s semifinals, before falling to Emily Mazzola of Chagrin Falls, 6-1, 7-6 (9) in the final.
Ferry lost to Mazzola, 6-4, 6-1, and to Colvin, 6-4, 6-0, to finish fourth.
No area teams advanced in doubles. JFK’s Claudia Ricotti and Laurencia Lee defeated Cardinal Mooney’s Jordan Stefko-Kacey haggerty, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, in a consolation match, before falling to Chagrin Falls’ Erica Leone-Anna Benson, 6-0, 6-2, in the fifth-place match and the final qualifying position.
