In recognition of National Fire safety Week, Austintown’s Fitch Preschool received information about fire prevention and safety from the Austintown Fire Department Oct. 4.
Capt. Dan Martin, Lt. Bob Rodkey and firefighter Tom Neff talked to the preschoolers about fire hazards, smoke detectors and what to do in an emergency. The students also received a tour of the station’s $400,000 fire truck that was purchased two years ago.
Rodkey told the kids to sit under their bedroom windows and make as much noise as they could if they were ever trapped in a burning building. He encouraged them to fight the urge to hide in their closet or under their bed because they were scared.
“If we hear you then we know where you are and we can come and get you,” Rodkey said.
The students were instructed to go home and make sure they have a designated outside meeting area in case of an emergency. They were also told to make sure their smoke detectors had birthdays so that it could receive the present of a new battery each year.
Rodkey told the preschoolers to remember four key points: Don’t play with matches, lighters or lighted candles and do not reach on top of the stove.
