The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center’s beauty salon opened for business Oct. 5. with senior cosmetology students standing by to service customers. The salon opens annually to give cosmetology students salon experience and practice, while servicing the community.

Cosmetology instructor Linda Tomko said the salon lets students work in a supervised and safe environment while enabling them to work on their communication skills with customer.

“They are working in a life-like setting, which introduces them to a salon environment,” Tomko said.

MCCTC senior Tammy Talarico, of Austintown, said her mother is a hair stylist and she grew up around beauty salons. She enjoys doing hair and can’t wait until she graduates in the spring so she can start her career as a hair stylist.

“I have always wanted to do this,” she said. “There is good training here, and it’s free!”

The salon includes 17 seniors who have completed 750 of the 1,500 hours needed to complete the cosmetology program. The salon uses name brand products and offers manicures, facials, haircuts, wet sets, perms, relaxers, hair color and waxing at affordable prices.

“For a minimal price, the public is getting a really good service from kids who are trying to please their customer and makes their skills better,” Tomko said.

The salon will be open through May from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. To schedule an appointment, call the salon at 330-729-4000, extension 1309.
