A “Mock Auction” took place at Poland’s Blackburn Home Sept. 29 where residents of the retirement home were eager to bid on items displayed in the living room.

Residents had opportunities to earn auction-only currency throughout August and September and had their stashes of “funny money” ready to go when the bidding started.

The bright purple tickets with the home’s logo were given as prizes and incentives for such things as a lucky game of Bingo, winning a hand of UNO, finding the most picture matches in a version of ‘Concentration” or best score at a bean bag toss fame at the home’s Apple Festival.

Items up for bid at the auction were supplied by staff members and friends of the Blackburn Home and included puzzle books, plush animals, seasonal decorations, clothing, calendars, snack and stationery.

A favorite at the auction were Handel’s gift cards donated by Clemente Ambulance. Excitement mounted as two “mystery cash boxes” came up for bid. Only the winner could open these.

Marcel Ulrich, of Auctions by Ulrich, was the auctioneer. He volunteered his time for the event and demonstrated the “lingo” used at auctions and the high-speed speech auctioneers are known for.
