Market Street Elementary first-graders received fire safety and prevention training Oct. 6 from the Boardman Fire Department. The students learned what to do and what not to do if their home was ablaze.
The firefighters brought their Mobile Fire Safety Classroom which let the students receive hands-on training and participate in fire drills. Lt. Bill Glaser told the first-graders when to call 911 and discussed fire hazards in the home.
He led them to a small bedroom where students were told to roll out of bed onto the floor, open their window and yell for help if they heard their smoke detector go off.
They were then instructed to feel the door for warmth before opening it. The firefighters filled the bedroom with harmless smoke to show the students how important it is to stay close to the floor. Each student exited the smoky room by climbing out the window and climbing down a ladder.
The students received a tour of the fire truck from firefighter John Berardi who explained to them what the equipment was used for. Second-grader Griffin Widrig said climbing down the ladder was his favorite part of the training.
He said he couldn’t see anything because of the smoke, but the firefighter helped him. Widrig also said he learned some interesting information that he did not know before.
“I didn’t know how far water can go from the fire hose,” he said. “They use special wrenches for the fire hydrant and the hose sprays water really far.”
