Fire department hosts open house

All of Poland’s fire trucks were out of the garage, but not because of a fire.
The Western Reserve Joint Fire District hosted its third annual open house Sunday from noon until 3 p.m. in honor of National Fire Prevention Week. Attendees received a tour of the department, free refreshments, balloons and safety information.
To reinforce what was taught, children practiced how to stop, drop and roll in the event their clothes caught fire. All four fire trucks were on display and open to inspection by the public. Though fire prevention week ended Oct. 9, the firefighters will be traveling to several schools throughout the month educating students of fire safety and prevention.
The Poland Fire Department has a chance to be awarded a $10,000 grant for its effort and commitment to fire safety. Be Fire Smart Safety Pledge program, through Liberty Mutual, is awarding grants to 10 fire stations across the nation that have the most completed fire safety quizzes from members of the community. The quiz consists of 10 multiple choice questions and can be accessed at www.BeFireSmart.com/JosephMills.
One on the site, choose the state and town, Poland, from the drop down menus to ensure the station is credited for the fire safety test. The quiz will be available until Oct. 31.
