Canfield doubles qualify for state

OBERLIN

Canfield’s top doubles team of Allison Pavlansky and Kaitlin Kaleel won their first two matches at Thursday’s Division I district tennis tournament at Oberlin College.

The Cardinals earned a state tournament berth and will play for seeding at Saturday’s semifinals and finals matches.

They defeated Morgan Dorsky and Corinne Sackett of Brush 6-1, 6-0 in the first round, then beat Broadview Heights-Brecksville’s Elise Griffin and Erin Davies 6-2, 6-2 in the second round.

They will meet Westlake’s Michelle Djohan and Kelsey Wanhainen in Saturday’s semifinal.

Division II

CANTON

Warren JFK’s Chelsea Ross and Liberty’s Victoria Ferry each won their first two matches at the Division II district tennis tournament at Weis Courts.

Ross and Ferry have earned state tournament berths and will play for seeding Saturday.

Ross, last week’s sectional champion, defeated St. Thomas Aquinas’ Katelyn Caniford 6-2, 6-2 in her first match Thursday, then rallied from a first set loss to beat CVCA’s Asia Harris 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2. She will meet Pepper Pike Orange’s Lydia Colvin in Saturday semifinal.

Ferry, who lost to Ross in last week’s sectional final, defeated Sarah Adler of Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown 7-5, 6-0 in her opening match, then rallied to beat Taylor Wedlake of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. She will play Emily Mazzola of Chagrin Falls on Saturday.

In doubles action, JFK’s Claudia Ricotti and Laurencia Lee and Mooney’s Jordan Stefko and Kacey Haggerty both won one match, then lost the second. The teams will meet in the consolation round needing two wins to earn the final state berth.

Riccotti-Lee beat Madeline Staats and Kayley Ferris of Mogadore Field, 6-1, 6-0, then lost to Alison Biltz and Allison Dorogi of Shaker Heights Laurel, 6-2, 6-0.

Stefko-Haggerty beat Ashley Fuchs and Abby Svetlak of Canton Central Catholic 6-4, 6-1 and lost to Taylor Johnson and Surya Khadlikar of Gates Mills Hawken, 6-2, 6-2.
