Two seek Dictrict 1 seat in Ohio House
COLUMBIANA
Two candidates, one with a long history in government service and one who is a newcomer to politics, are seeking the Ohio House 1st District Seat.
Democrat Linda Bolon has long served Columbiana County. She says she’s good at securing state and federal funds for local projects.
The funds include $5 million for the Baard Energy plan to turn Ohio’s high-sulfur coal into aviation fuel.
Other grants include $1.4 million in federal Community Development money for various projects, $2 million for rest areas and allied safety measures, home-efficiency grants for people with low and moderate income and $150,000 to restore a train station in Lisbon used for meetings and as a rest area for bicyclists on the Great Ohio Lake-To-River Greenway. She also obtained $507,000 for a new office for the Columbiana County Department of Job and Family Services.
Her Republican opponent, Craig Newbold, graduated from Beaver Local High School. He said that technically he is retired but as what he calls a “social entrepreneur,” he founded NewLife Technical Institute, a nonprofit technology school; and Newbold Technologies, a professional IT services company based in East Liverpool.
Newbold said that he created two successful companies that created more than 1,000 jobs.
He said his priority was creating new jobs and sustaining present jobs. He also wants to see less government involvement and regulation.
“My interest in becoming the representative for District 1 is based on wanting to ‘give back,’” he added.
