Judge orders tests for Mom in fake cancer case

ROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) — A Macomb County judge has ordered competency and psychological testing for a woman accused of convincing her healthy 12-year-old son and others that the boy had cancer to collect thousands of dollars in donations.

Roseville District Court Judge Marco Santia postponed a preliminary examination for 47-year-old Carol Lynn Schnuphase.

Schnuphase is charged with fraud and child abuse.

Authorities said she drugged her son, and shaved his hair and eyebrows so he appeared to have cancer. A prosecutor claimed she received $7,500 from a church fundraiser, in addition to other donations. The money was used to pay bills.

The boy has been placed in foster care.

Schnuphase’s next court date is Dec. 15.
